Frequently asked questions
The most common questions we get from our clients
Yes, spray tanning is a safe alternative to sun tanning. The solution is applied in a controlled environment and is made with FDA-approved ingredients. DHA-based sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, American Academy of Dermatology Association, Canadian Dermatology Association and the American Medical Association as a safer alternative to sun bathing. The FDA permanently added DHA to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970’s restricting it to external application only.
No, absolutely not! Our solution is made of the highest quality, natural ingredients. Each and every spray tan is customized to your specific skin type/tone to give you a beautiful, natural tan- one glow at a time!
In all honesty, 90% of a successful spray tan is in prepping the skin correctly. Please make sure to have all waxing, sugaring, manicures and pedicures done at least 24 hours before your tanning appointment. The day before your appointment you will want to shower and exfoliate using an oil-free scrub and scrub mitt/gloves. Please avoid all bar soaps (non tan approved) and Dove products before and after tanning because they tend to create a barrier on the skin. Also, please do not shower right before your appointment as the heat/steam will adversely affect your tan. If you must shower the day of your tan, please do so a minimum of 4 hours before your appointment and shower only with cool water. Avoid using any soap, shaving cream, exfoliants, lotion, oils, perfume, make-up or deodorant the day of your tan.
After you receive your airbrush tan, you will want to put on dark, loose fitting clothes with flip-flops. Please no jeans, tight fitting clothes, sports bras, socks or running shoes until after your first rinse. Rainy day? Make sure to wear a jacket with a hood, loose pants, an umbrella and shoes that cover your feet but aren’t tight. Also it is important to not get wet in any way BEFORE your first rinse. Avoid the following right after being sprayed: rain, washing your hands and face, working out, any water activities, perspiring, and skin on skin contact such as crossing your legs. These activities are fine after your first rinse. Please refer to the ‘Prep/AfterCare’ section of this website for more details.
If you have been sprayed with a Rapid solution, please follow the 2-6 hour rinse time that was recommended. You may have little color immediately following your rinse but don’t panic. This particular tan continues to develop for up to 24 hours after rinsing. Do not use any type of body wash during your first rinse. Also, do not apply any moisturizer or any other product to your skin for 24 hours after your initial rinse.
The entire process takes about 30 minutes, from start to finish. I do not rush clients and want to make sure everyone feels comfortable, calm, and refreshed. if it takes longer..thats just fine! If you are on a time crunch- let me know and I will make sure we hit that mark too.
Although results may vary by skin type, custom airbrush tans can last anywhere from 7-10 days..or a little longer. The results will also depend on how well the recommended pre and post tan care is followed. Your skin will naturally start to shed old skin cells and your airbrush tan will begin to fade. You can delay this process by using a spray tan friendly shower gel and moisturizer (free from sulfates, mineral oil, and petroleum).
Please follow the recommended wait times before your first rinse. Do not use any type of body wash during your first rinse and don’t apply any moisturizer or other products to your skin for 24 hours after getting sprayed. Your tan will continue to develop for up to 24 hours after getting sprayed. Do not be alarmed when you see the cosmetic bronzer washing off. This is normal and will not affect your tan. Avoid scrubbing while in the shower and choose body wash that do not contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate.). Use a sharp, new razor when shaving and use hair conditioner in place of shaving cream. When exiting the shower, pat dry with the towel instead of rubbing dry.
Massages, manicures and pedicures must be avoided after your tan because the water soak will remove the tan and the products used during services will break down your tan. Also, avoid long hot showers, baths and hot tubs because hot water and prolonged water submersion will break down your tan. It is imperative that you Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize with a product that does not contain mineral oil or petroleum’ after the word moisturizer. This will slow down your skin’s natural cell turnover and ensure an even, flawless fade. Lastly, it is recommended that you wear sunscreen when outdoors. The lotion versions of Coola and Sun Bum sunscreens are two brands of sunscreen that are safe for spray tans.
Female clients may choose to tan in whatever you feel comfortable in…a bathing suit, undergarments or nothing at all. Male clients must wear an undergarment/bathing suit.
Please keep in mind the tanning solution will get on any garment worn so you will probably want to choose something dark.
All solutions will wash out so no need to worry 🙂

Spray Tan Care
Here is what you do before your spray tan:
- Waxing and shaving should be completed at least 48 hours prior to your appointment and shaving should be completed with a razor that lacks a moisture strip.
- Exfoliate! Stay away from a body scrub/loofah combo as most are oil-based and will leave a residue. Instead, use an exfoliating mitt.
- Spray tanning should always be the last beauty treatment completed due to barriers that spa treatment products can create. Complete all facials, and massages the day prior to your spray tan.
- Avoid using lotions, oils, and deodorant the day of your appointment as they can leave a barrier on your skin that the tan will not adhere to.
- Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing with open-toes sandals. Please note that the bronzer in my solution may transfer to your items but is water soluble and should wash out.
- Complete manicures and pedicures the day prior. If completed the day-of tan, please forgo any oils/lotions that your nail technician may apply on you. If completed days after your tan, your tan may become uneven due to soaking, acetone, oils, lotions, etc.
- Any bar soaps/cream-based body washes (Dove specifically) are known to leave residue on the skin and can create a barrier that the tan cannot penetrate through and may leave streaks. Any gel-based body wash is best. Showering should be completed at least four hours prior to tanning to allow your pH levels to neutralize. If you must shower within four hours, run cold shower water at the end of your shower.
Here is what you need to keep in mind on the day of your spray tan session:
- Wear dark, loose clothing to your appointment as the solution may rub off on clothing and light colors may become stained.
- Avoid wearing tight clothing or undergarments, as they can rub off the solution and cause streaks.
- Bring flip flops or open-toed shoes to wear after your session to avoid smudging the solution on your feet.
Here is what you do after your spray tan:
- Before rinsing, do not get wet or sweat until your first initial water rinse. This means no showering, working out, lotions, or liquid foundations on the skin until after you take your initial rinse. If you have pets, do not let them lick you.
- No touching - if you touch yourself while your tan is developing, this could result in stained palms.
- If you do not rinse at your designated time, your tan may develop too light or too dark. Do not use soap during your initial rinse. Temperature should be lukewarm. If you see streaks after getting out of the shower, hop back in and use your hand to guide the leftover bronzer off.
- The more hydrated your skin is the longer your tan will last. You moisturizer should be free of mineral oil and artificial fragrance. You may use a tan extending lotion that contains DHA after day three of your tan. In addition, be sure to moisturize and drink lots of water!
- Avoid using any loofahs or wash rags during your showers. It is best to wash with hands only in areas where needed (pits + privates) to ensure a long-lasting tan. A gel-based body wash is best. Glo-bar soap, a spray tan safe bar soap is available for purchase at the studio.
- Avoid swimming in the pool/ocean for long periods of time, long lot showers/baths, saunas, and excessive sweating. Your tan will not last very long if you’re planning to do these activities excessively.
Here is the best way to maintain your tan:
- Please follow the recommended wait times before your first rinse. Your tan will continue to develop over the next 24 hours so please do not use any type of body wash or moisturizer until 24 hours after your initial rinse. Using body products too soon can potentially change the outcome of your tan. Do not be alarmed when you see the cosmetic bronzer washing off. This is normal and does not affect your tan.
- Once the tan has fully developed (24 hours), you can begin using a body wash that does not contain sulfates (SLS or SLES), mineral oil or petroleum (avoid bar soaps, Dove, Dial, Olay, Bath & Body, Victoria Secret, etc.). This is important because using products that are not pH balanced could result in a lighter tan that does not last (acidic skin) or a tan that turns golden or orange (alkaline skin). If you need assistance in selected products, LUXE offers pH balanced body washes and moisturizers made specifically for spray tans. While in the shower, avoid scrubbing and when toweling off pat dry instead of rubbing.
- Use a sharp, new razor when shaving. We recommend using a good quality hair conditioner in place of shaving cream.
- Massages, manicures and pedicures must be avoided. Products used during services will break down your tan.
- Avoid long hot showers, baths and hot tubs because hot water and prolonged water submersion will break down your tan.
- Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! It is imperative that you moisturize with a spray tan friendly lotion (non petroleum based) at least two times daily. This will slow down your skin’s natural cell turnover and will ensure an even, flawless fade.
- It is recommended that you wear sunscreen when outdoors because spray tans do not provide protection. The lotion versions of Coola and Sun Bum are two brands of sunscreen that are safe for spray tans.
- Airbrush tans can last anywhere from 5-10 days depending on your skin type and how diligently you follow the Pre and Post Tan Care recommendations.
- If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact LUXE Mobile Airbrush Tanning.
